In December 1995 Ray Rider and his parents, Jim and Colleen, purchased a very historical and important piece of Avon, Ohio's history. Located in the heart of the French Creek district, the main part of the building has been traced to the early 1800s and may very well be one of Avon's original buildings. For over 100 years, the building has been home to a tavern operated under various names. During prohibition it was a speakeasy known as Gate's Lunch Counter, and for decades afterward it had been known as the French Creek Tavern.
As the tavern had already been closed when the Rider family purchased the building, they first used the location as the new home for their beverage store, Blue Chip Beverage. Ray has been in the restaurant/bar business for most of his life and always wanted to own a tavern, so in July 2000 they reopened the tavern under the name Creekside BrewHouse & Tavern. We visited with Ray recently, and listened as he described Creekside BrewHouse & Tavern's offerings;
Creekside BrewHouse & Tavern has been an Avon, Ohio gathering spot for well over one hundred years. We offer some absolutely awesome food that rivals anything else you can find. All of our food is top notch, from our prime rib to our crab cake dinners and our wings. All of our wing sauces and soups are homemade and our hamburgers are hand packed from some of the finest meat available. We have customers that drive from Cleveland, Lakewood, and Shaker Heights just for our burgers, and with nearly 100 different beers on hand we can always help you select the perfect beer or wine to accompany your meal.
Our regular customers agree that Creekside BrewHouse & Tavern is a comfortable, homey meeting place with a very cozy atmosphere. In the winter you will always find our fireplace ablaze, and during the cooler months we have entertainment most Friday and Saturday nights. It can range from country to blues, bluegrass, classic rock, oldies, and variety bands that play a little bit of everything. We also have a great jukebox featuring a very eclectic selection of songs.
We are always trying to find something to keep our patrons entertained. We host beer and wine tastings on a regular basis, in addition to holding themed events such as our Captain Morgan nights. Monday is our "Martini Night" and our customers can choose from a couple dozen different martinis that are on special.
Tuesday nights are "Celebrity Bartending Night" where guest bartenders help raise money for worthy causes. People can bartend for the night and all of their tips and a portion of the evening's receipts are donated to the cause they are supporting. We have raised tens of thousands of dollars this way for local charities and other worthwhile causes. Tuesday nights are also when we serve our New Zealand mussels.
Thursday nights are "Cajun Night". We've been told that our Jambalaya is better than Emeril's, and it's one of the mainstays of our Cajun menu. Then on Friday nights we feature our famous Lake Erie perch dinners.
We can seat up to 125 guests and can host birthday parties, graduation parties, or any special occasion. We offer off-premise catering, and are willing to open early for special events. We work very closely with our customers, and their imagination is the only limit as to the kind of food we can prepare for them.
Creekside BrewHouse & Tavern is continuing the century-old tradition of being one of Avon, Ohio's most prolific gathering spots. Stop by Creekside BrewHouse & Tavern today, and don't forget to tell them Avon Business & Living sent you!
