While vacationing in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida, John Heidenreich was encouraged by his wife to have his first reflexology session. He had worked for twenty-seven years in the manufacturing industry, and although he knew that reflexologists silently communicate with their patients' bodies through the skillful application of alternating pressure to reflex areas of the feet, John was not enthusiastic about the upcoming event. Imagine his amazement when the reflexologist told him that he ate a lot of junk food, didn't drink enough water, and had back problems in the past - all things she had learned from simply using reflexology on his feet. Needless to say, John was immediately impressed.
Before returning home, John called the reflexologist and asked how he could find out more about reflexology. He called the International Institute of Reflexology and learned they would soon be hosting a two day seminar in Strongsville, Ohio. John attended the seminar, began his study of reflexology, and in 1992 founded Reflexions Reflexology Center, LLC in Avon. He became an ARCB Board Certified Reflexologist in 1995, and in 2002 opened the Reflexology Certification Institute, the only state registered school of reflexology in Northern Ohio. We met with John recently, and listened as he provided this overview of his company's offerings:
Reflexions Reflexology Center specializes in hand and foot reflexology, Reiki sessions, and reflexology certification classes. Reflexology is a centuries-old technique that promotes physical changes that can bring about balance, healing, and stress reduction. It promotes profound relaxation, increases circulation and lymphatic flow, reduces stress and tension, and boosts the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the entire body. Reiki, a natural healing technique that balances the body's energy, helps reduce stress and promotes spiritual growth while enhancing healing at all levels.
Reflexology is relaxation technique that reduces stress so the body can begin to heal itself. I work with clients having heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, cancer, MS, AIDS, and many other medical conditions. It is common knowledge that a stressed body will not heal, and by reducing stress and helping the body to balance and its systems to become more efficient, you have less discomfort, less pain, less inflammation, and the medication you are taking becomes more effective. Reflexology is not a replacement for a doctor's care, but works in concert with traditional medical care to facilitate healing on many levels.
One of my clients is a seventy-four year old woman who has made reflexology part of her ongoing healthcare regimen, and she lives a stress-free life and still plays tennis twice a week. Others maintain their health by combining reflexology with massage, acupuncture, and other alternative therapies. The typical reflexology session, which is a fantastic stress reliever, lasts for approximately one hour. During that time, I work the hands and feet spending as much time on your feet as a massage therapist spends on the entire body. Most people feel their stress levels reduce to the point that they usually fall asleep while in my chair.
The Reflexology Certification Institute is state registered and has graduated thirty-five students since 2002. We are one of only four registered reflexology schools in Ohio, and the only one in Northern Ohio. We offer two reflexology certifications courses. Our 100 hour course is designed for healthcare professionals or for anyone having at least 75 hours of college level anatomy/physiology. This short course teaches ini-depth reflexology and prepares the students for certification. The 225 hour course is for those wanting to become professional reflexologists. After completing the course, passing a written test and a practical examination, you then become a Certified Reflexologist. The 225 hour course includes 56 classroom hours, 80 documented one-hour sessions, and 89 hours of home study from our Study Guide and Video. Classroom study includes hands-on technique application, relaxation techniques, and documentation.
I have had students go on to found their own practices and work through dentists' and chiropractors' offices. In my last class I had three RNs and an LPN who are going to use their newly learned skills in a doctor's office and a hospital environment.
